Dead horse hoof
After visiting my grandma in Alamogordo, checking out the climbing at the tunnel and eating a green chili cheeseburger I headed out on the Sunspot Highway. Despite the cold, I got some good shots to add to my Death Series and had fun finding interesting compositions in the forest. I love overcast days – as few as the come – but I really needed my tripod to increase the DOF. If you have never been up close and personal with a decaying carcass, it sucks. The smell is absolutely horrendous.

Dead horse ribs
I wish I would have taken an overview of the scene. The carcass was in a somewhat muddy bog. It had been drug from it’s pool of blood and dismantled by either wolves or bears. The limbs were spread all across the bog and the hair from the tail was strewn all over the field. I’m certain I looked absolutely crazy in the middle of this muddy field with a huge camera in 30 degree weather passionately shooting a decaying horse carcass. I guess I am crazy.

Aspen tree

Aspen tree limbs
It was a lot of fun finding compositions with these aspen limbs against the gray sky. I really like the curly branches in the shot above.
