My life, one photo at a time.

Rock Rodeo 2010

Aaron on something with Chains in the name V0!

I recently returned from the 17th annual Rock Rodeo at Hueco Tanks and it was an absolute blast! I feel so fortunate to have this place in my own backyard.

This was the first comp I’ve been to and although we didn’t place we all had a really great time.

There was no pressure. It was just you and your buddies climbing together, pushing each other. If you started to feel wrecked, you could watch world class climbers send the nastiest problems at Hueco.

Another enjoyable aspect was the climbing community in general. We made some great new friends and partied our asses off!

Emil on Two Star Arete (v2)

The climbing was awesome! I sent my first v2, two highball v0′s and a highball v1.

There’s nothing like a highball boulder problem. I’m sure to the average person it seems absolutely insane, but to the climber it feels natural to be exposed, in control and connected with the rock.

Beautiful Rock Ranch Sunset

I didn’t get to shoot many photos, but I did get to work on a couple concepts I’ve had rolling around in my head.

I’ve decided there are two ways to shoot climbing photos. Shoot from the side and shoot from above. You can get in pretty tight from above, but if you shoot from the side you have to go wide.

Studying Simon Carter’s work has really helped. His book, World Climbing, Images from the Edge is pretty much the bible on natural light climbing photography.

It was also cool to meet and watch Andy Mann shoot. Andy’s style is pretty sweet. He has a lot of cool shots with dramatic light.

The previous weekend, we met Andy, Beau Stuart, Jonathan Siegrist, Paige Claassen and several other climbers from Colorado and Albuqurque at Sitting Bull where Andy climbed up this rope, rapped his leg around his light stand and somehow managed to keep himself from spinning around in circles while firing off a couple frames. Sick!

Epic Bonfire Party

The night ended with an epic party that I felt the aftermath from well into tonight.

Conversations ranged from the best place to fish in the Gila to the importance of Jackson Pollock’s influence on the art world and society in general.

I finished the night watching the silhouette of a beautiful woman dancing in front of the enormous fire.

Wicked wind from the west

Wicked wind from the west

We woke up to our tents slapping us in the face thanks to the wind from an approaching storm.

We quickly stumbled into the jeep and pointed the hood toward the east.
